Present status of the ovine gene map (Ovis aries); comparison with the bovine map (Bos taurus)

Abstract: The status of the sheep map to the end of June 1993 is presented. Mapping information is available for a total of 107 loci comprising 16 anonymous DNA segments. This is an increase of 66 loci since 1990. No loci have been mapped on 10 of the 26 autosomes. Comparison of the cattle (350 loci) and sheep maps confirms their close evolutionary and genetic relationship and will reduce the effort required for their gene mapping.

“…This confusion has been resolved by the revision of the sheep karyotype presented here. Gene assignments published after the review by Echard et al (1994), for chromosomes 4, 6, 8, 9, 19, and 20, and cited in Table 3, are now consistent with the numbering recommended in this report. The casein gene cluster (CSN) is now assigned to chromosome 6 with albumin (ALB), phosphoglucomutase 2 (PGM2) and phosphoribosylpyrophosphate amidotransferase (PPAT).…”

“…In their 1994 review of the sheep gene map, Echard et al (1994) noted the confusion between chromosomes 4 and 6, 8 and 9, and 19 and 20. This confusion has been resolved by the revision of the sheep karyotype presented here.…”

“…It had confirmed the localisation of IL-2 gene at the q22-->q23 bands of chromosome 17 in Punjab Urial as previously suggested by Chowdhary et al (1994), Echard et al (1994) and Hediger et al (1991) (Fig. 1).…”

“…By the complementary processes of deletion mapping with a panel of chromosomally characterized sheephamster cell hybrids, and comparative genome analysis, which is focused on identifying conserved chromosomal segments, we have newly assigned more loci to sheep chromosome 3p. With the five loci we reported earlier on sheep 3q (Broad et al 19931, the present study now brings to 30 the total number of loci reported on sheep chromosome 3 (see Echard et al 1994). IGKC (Fig.…”
