Present State of the Theory of Homogeneous Nucleation

Abstract: An instrument has been developed to measure the complex dynamic shear modulus of 45 mg bitumen samples over a frequency range of 2-200 Hz and over a continuously variable temperature range. A moving coil vibrator applies a torque to the sample and a capacitance transducer measures the resulting rotation. A resolved component indicator is used to measure the amplitudes and relative phase of the voltages representing torque and rotation. The components of the complex modulus are then calculated directly by the u… Show more

“…If we neglect both the coagulation and fragmentation of nuclei, then, instead of the Szilard-Farkas equations [4], the evolution of the nuclei size distribution function can be determined by solving the Becker-Döring-Zel'dovich kinetic equations [22][23][24][25]:…”

“…Before solving system (1), it is useful to evaluate the possibility of nucleation in one of the limiting regimes, which, following [4], will be called rapid and slow nucleation. A convenient criterion of the "rapidity" of nucleation is the ratio…”

“…This effect can be estimated by assuming that the coagulation of like-charged particles practically ceases when k 00 /k ++ < = e. Then equation k ++ = k 00 exp(-U n /k B t g ) leads to the inequality , which can be used to estimate the size of the aerosol particles depending on the characteristics of the medium [12].…”
