Presence of porcine cytomegalovirus, a porcine roseolovirus, in wild boars in Italy and Germany

Abstract: Porcine cytomegalovirus (PCMV), a porcine roseolovirus (PRV) that is closely related to human herpesviruses 6 and 7, is commonly found in commercial pigs. PCMV/PRV is important in xenotransplantation, because in preclinical trials in which pig organs were transplanted into non-human primates, transmission of PCMV/PRV was shown to be associated with significantly reduced survival of the xenotransplants. PCMV/PRV was also transmitted in the first transplantation of a pig heart into a human patient worldwide and … Show more

“…When however, the antibody titer declined or is negative, testing of organ biopsies is recommended. In a schematic presentation based on the results presented in 19 and, 20 as well in previous publications 5, [15][16][17] studying methods and time line to detect PCMV/PRV, possible test strategies are indicated (Figure 3). The related human roseolovirus HHV-6 is better studied in this context.…”

[15][16][17][18][19][20]27 Therefore, also testing of organs was included. The broader the bars the more effective testing will be.…”
