“…In present study among 310 patients, a male: female ratio of 1.3:1 was seen. Present study finding of male preponderance was similar other studies done in Maharashtra by Sushma HK et al, and also by Thakare et al 27,28 However this finding is different from studies done in Indore by Atal S et al, and in Gujrat by Galani VJ et al 29,30 Majority of the patients were below 40 years of age (65%) whereas only 35% of the patients were above 40 years of age. In addition to this, present study findings depicted that schizophrenia has an early age of onset, affecting males in their early twenties and females in their late twenties and early thirties.…”

“…Present study finding regarding favoured use of atypical anti-psychotics is in concordance with other authors in the field but in contrast to Sushma HK et al, who concluded that typical anti-psychotics were prescribed more as compared to atypical antipsychotics. 27,34,35 Olanzapine (31%) was the most frequently prescribed medication amongst anti-psychotics followed by risperidone (26%), quetiapine (12%), haloperidol (10%), amisulpiride (8%), aripiprazole (8%) and iloperidone (5%).…”

“…Considering the prescribing pattern of antipsychotic medications in our study, it was identified that majority (86%) of the patients were prescribed with combination therapy as compared to monotherapy (14%) which is comparable to the findings of other studies. 14,17,20 Even though the guidelines recommend initiating the treatment with only one antipsychotic medication at a time, many of the times the use of combination of antipsychotic medications might be required to achieve greater therapeutic responses when the use of single antipsychotic drug provides unsatisfactory response and also due to the complexity of the clinical presentation.…”

“…Our study has shown a lower prescription rate of anticholinergics as compared to other studies that showed a range between 5.5-94%. 14,20,22,24,27,28 World health organization treatment guidelines do not recommend routine use of anticholinergics in patients with psychiatric illness who are on antipsychotics but use only for short term in selected cases. it should only be used in patients who are on high potency antipsychotics, having a previous history of extrapyramidal side effects or develops EPS and showing no improvement even after switching to another antipsychotic drug.…”

“…The combination of antipsychotics may include concomitant use of more than one drug which may be a combination of typicals or atypicals. It may also involve the prescription of atypical and typical antipsychotics together as well as combination with mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, anticholinergics and antidepressants [15,23]. The frequency of antipsychotic combination therapy vary widely often ranging from 9 -94% [23,24,25].…”
