Preparedness needs research: How fundamental science and international collaboration accelerated the response to COVID-19

Abstract: The first cluster of patients suffering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified on December 21, 2019, and as of July 29, 2020, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections have been linked with 664,333 deaths and number at least 16,932,996 worldwide. Unprecedented in global societal impact, the COVID-19 pandemic has tested local, national, and international preparedness for viral outbreaks to the limits. Just as it will be vital to identify missed opportunities and im… Show more

“…This was only possible because the novel mRNA vaccine platform is relatively rapid to develop once viral genome sequencing is completed compared to other platforms. 2 The SARS-CoV-2 RNA is 30 kb in length, which includes a 5'-cap structure and a 3'-poly-A tail. The first open reading frames (ORF) with over 65% of its genome encodes 16 nonstructural proteins, while the other ORFs on 35% of its genome closer to the 3' terminus encodes at least 4 main structural proteins, namely spike (S), membrane (M), envelope (E) and nucleocapsid (N).…”

“…The first cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were detected in December 2019 in Wuhan (China). Shortly thereafter, the causative agent was identified as SARS-CoV-2 1 . SARS-CoV-2 has spread worldwide in a short period of time, unlike the Betacoronavirus members SARS-CoV-1 (2002)(2003) and MERS-CoV (2012 and2015), whose outbreaks could be better contained, limiting international spread and averting global transmission [2][3][4] .…”

“…Scientific collaborations have always been regarded as critical actions to address global pandemics [ 5 , 6 ], since collaborations and/or international collaborations can not only make more nations coming into the global network to handle the crisis, but allow different nation or scientist to mutually access researching, working expertise or resources. While much can be gleaned from our general understanding of the importance of global collaboration and coordination in responding to COVID-19, many pertinent questions exist.…”
