Preparation of zinc hydroxystannate nanocomposites coated by organophosphorus and investigation of their effect on mechanical properties and flame retardancy of poly(vinyl chloride)

Abstract: A novel organic–inorganic nanohybrid flame retardant was prepared. The organic flame retardant could not only surface modify to the inorganic flame retardant but also improve flame retardancy of inorganic flame retardant with the synergistic effect.

“…Preparation of PVC nanocomposite containing 5 wt.% ZHS/GO has similar processing condition with the procedure of DOPO-VTS-ZHS/PVC reported in our literature [ 20 ], while DOPO-VTS-ZHS was instead by ZHS/GO in this study. Meantime, for comparison, pristine PVC and PVC nanocomposites with 5 wt.% contents ZHS or GO were also prepared under the same processing conditions.…”

“…The characteristic peaks of ZHS were centered at 3126 and 1172 cm −1 and were assigned to the stretching vibrations of O-H and Sn-O bonds, respectively. In addition, the peak at 768 cm −1 was attributed to the stretching vibrations of [Sn(OH) 6 ] 2− belonging to ZHS [1]. After ZHS was coated with ALP, the spectra of pure ZHS was changed.…”

“…Halogenated flame retardants are used widely in reducing the fire hazards of polymeric materials. On the other hand, the halogen-containing flame retardants usually cause serious environmental contamination because they can produce poisonous substances during the combustion of halogen-containing composites [1]. Therefore, halogen-free and low smoke fire retardant composites have been applied in polymer matrices because of their desired environmental acceptance.…”

“…studied the synergistic effect between an organic flame retardant and inorganic flame retardant in a core‐shell structure. Significant improvement in the formation of char residual of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in air was observed and the fire hazard of PVC was reduced . Inspired by the above researches, it was believed that the capsule material could present synergistic effect with α‐ZrP to enhance the flame retardance, as α‐ZrP itself contains the zirconium and phosphorus elements with potential of imparting fire retardant behavior.…”
