Preparation of Tung Oil‐Loaded PU/PANI Microcapsules and Synergetic Anti‐Corrosion Properties of Self‐Healing Epoxy Coatings

Abstract: Tung oil is used as a catalyst‐free repair agent. Tung oil‐loaded polyurethane (PU) microcapsules are prepared by interfacial polymerization in a SiO2‐stabilized Pickering emulsion system, polyaniline (PANI) is deposited in situ on the PU microcapsule surface, and tung oil‐loaded PU/PANI double‐layer shell microcapsules are obtained. Synthesized PU/PANI microcapsules showed the characteristic dark‐green color of conductive PANI. The average particle size is 31.1 ± 8.1 µm and the core content is 45.1 ± 4.3 wt%.… Show more

“…The materials exhibited good activity against Escherichia coli , indicating a good potential as, for example, antimicrobial coating materials. Recently, the design of tung oil-loaded polyurethane microcapsules covered with a double-layer shell of polyaniline was reported, and self-healing anti-corrosion coatings were prepared by adding 10 wt.% of these microcapsules into an epoxy resin [ 141 ].…”

“…Therefore, it is necessary to develop rapid treatments to improve the process of modifier entering the wood and shorten the preparation time. Epoxy resin is a type of excellent thermosetting resin which is widely used for its excellent heat resistance, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical properties, and adhesive properties. At present, solvent-based epoxy resin is used as a functional coating, such as a flame retardant, an antibacterial, or for anti-corrosion coating on wood surfaces. The application is limited not only because of its short-term effectiveness but also due to its harm to the environment.…”

“…The former two methods were usually employed to prepare microcapsules with polymeric shells. In situ polymerization in oil/water emulsion was employed to produce microcapsules with shells such as polyurea-formaldehyde [ 11 ], polyurethane [ 12 ], polyurea [ 13 ], and phenol formaldehyde [ 14 ]. The solvent evaporation phase separation method can be applied to encapsulate hexadecane by a wide range of polymeric shells including poly(1-lactide), poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl formal), poly(vinyl acetate), poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide), poly(vinyl cinnamate) [ 8 ], and polystyrene [ 15 ].…”
