Preparation of TiO2 loaded with crystalline nano Ag by a one-step low-temperature hydrothermal method

Abstract: TiO 2 loaded with crystalline nano silver (c-Ag/TiO 2 ) was successfully synthesized by a one-step low-temperature hydrothermal method in aqueous solution using tetra-n-butyl titanate and AgNO 3 as precursors. The structure and morphology were characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis absorption spectra (UV-Vis) and fluorescence spectra (FS). The photocatalytic activity was tested with phot… Show more

“…The SEM and TEM images ( Figure S1, Supporting Information) show the morphology and size distribution of the TiO 2 NPs synthesized according to a previously modified report, 24 which indicate that they are spherical in shape with an average size of about 3−5 nm. The XRD pattern confirms the tetragonal anatase structure of TiO 2 (JCPDS no.…”

“…In the case of composite materials, basically two approaches can be found, either in situ synthesis of metal nanostructures in the matrix using chemical, thermal or photoinduced reductions; or incorporation of nanoparticles colloidal dispersions during the matrix preparation. The matrix can typically be inorganic, [496][497][498][499] sol-gel based matrix [215,[500][501][502][503][504][505][506][507][508][509][510] or polymers. [511][512][513][514] Regarding the in situ growth, the main drawbacks are the limitations in terms of control of the shape of the particles, which are often spherical or wire-type structures and the homogeneity in size and dispersion.…”

“…It is well established that the recombination of carriers in a semiconductor must be prevented as much as possible to favor the photocatalyzed reactions. The freshly formed Ag can act as electron traps to facilitate the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs as well as the dye injected electrons due to the high Schottky barriers at Ag-Bi 2 WO 6 interface [22,47]. PL spectra have confirmed the significantly inhibited recombination of photogenerated carriers.…”
