Preparation of PVdF-based electrospun membranes and their application as separators

Abstract: A one-step method preparing of poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based electrospun membranes (PEMs) containing TiO 2 has been developed. The effect of TiO 2 on the morphology, degree of crystallization and electrochemical behavior of PEMs was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and electrochemical measurements. The PEMs containing TiO 2 show improved ionic conductivity and cycling performance compared with pure PEMs.

“…Phase separation of the polymer solution for the preparation of porous membranes can be induced by several methods, including immersion precipitation, precipitation from the vapour phase, and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) [7,8]. Until now, only a few works have been reported on preparation of PVDF microporous membrane via TIPS [4,[7][8][9][10]. This processing technique has proven to be a valuable method for making commercial membranes as it shows advantages such as low tendency for defect formation, high degrees of porosity and effective control of the pore size.…”

“…PVDF is a biocompatible polymer and scaffolds of electrospun membranes of this polymer have been reported [15,16]. Once again, the membrane structure and porosity play an important role in the performance of this material.…”

“…[10] PVDF scaffolds of electrospun membranes of this polymer have been reported. [11] A number of procedures are available to produce porous PVDF with more or less controlled pore morphology. From the point of view of cell culture the interest is an interconnected pore structure that allows cell seeding and diffusion of nutrients and waste products of the cell metabolism.…”
