Preparation of novel, moisture-stable, Lewis-acidic ionic liquids containing quaternary ammonium salts with functional side chains

Abstract: Ionic liquids, or room temperature molten salts, have attracted increasing interest over recent years, particularly in the area of green chemistry, due to their advantageous properties including negligible vapour pressure and wide liquid range. 1-3 Work has focussed on liquids formed from dialkylimidazolium halides which are readily prepared from 1-methylimidazole and a slight excess of the desired haloalkane. 4 Addition of a suitable molar ratio of aluminium chloride to these salts gives rise to ionic liquids… Show more

“…The DSC results clearly show to relate to the differences of chemical structure between each eutectic mixture. In other words, the highest of the melting point may suggest the existence of inappropriate character of the functional groups in the nitrogen cations (Abbott, et al, 2001) in term of reducing the melting point. The appropriate functional groups of ammonium based chloride compounds will create the suitable eutectic components for preparation of low melting points eutectic mixtures.…”

“…Thus they show good potential for a "green alternative" for metal and alloy electrodeposition as well as for other various chemical processes. Currently, the interest is focused towards those kinds of ionic liquids formed by the mixture of choline chloride with a metal salt, alcohol, amide or organic acid (Abbott et al, 2001;Abbott et al, 2006;Endres 2002). This electrochemical medium is also characterized by good air and water stability with no additional precautions.…”

“…Deep eutectic solvents possess properties similar to ionic liquids and share many properties with them [51]. Deep eutectic solvents usually have simpler structures than ionic liquids and they can be prepared by mixing a hydrogen bond donor with a hydrogen bond acceptor in the appropriate ratios.…”
