Preparation of NaA Zeolite from High Iron and Quartz Contents Coal Gangue by Acid Leaching—Alkali Melting Activation and Hydrothermal Synthesis

Abstract: In this study, NaA zeolite was successfully synthesized from coal gangue with high contents of iron and quartz as the main raw material. The results show that most iron ions can be removed from coal gangue after calcination at 700 °C for 2 h, leaching in hydrochloric acid with a mass fraction of 20% for 7 h and a liquid-solid ratio of 3.5:1. When m (acid leached residue of calcined gangue):m (Na2CO3) = 1.1 and melting at 750 °C for 2 h, the quartz and other aluminosilicates turn into nepheline, which dissolve … Show more

“…Liupanshui City (Guizhou Province, China) produces over 10 million tons of gangue each year; this amount has exceeded 200 million tons when the accumulation of previous years is taken into account. Compared to other regions in China, coal gangue from Liupanshui has high iron content and medium aluminum content and is reddish after calcination, making it unsuitable for making products requiring high whiteness, such as ceramics [ 14 ]; this further narrows the scope for utilization. However, coal gangue is a rejected resource of aluminum and iron, from which aluminum and iron ions can be extracted to expand the applications of gangue.…”

“…In previous works, coal gangue by alkali melting activation‐acid leaching was utilized to synthesize zeolites, 34 but the optimal conditions were not explored. To find out the best preparation conditions for mesoporous materials, the orthogonal experimental design was used to solve the problem 35 .…”
