Preparation of Anti-Fouling Polyethersulfone Ultrafiltration Membrane by an External High Voltage Electric Enhancing Method

Abstract: In this article, a novel method of applying high voltage (1-5 kV) to the conventional immersion precipitation phase inversion process was used to prepare polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes when PVP (30 K) was used as an additive. The effects of the external electric field on the structure, surface functional groups, membrane potential, and surface hydrophilicity of the membranes were researched. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption amounts on the membranes and the separation performances of the memb… Show more

“…For example, an increase in the applied electric field or a flow rate beyond the critical value will lead to the formation of beads or beaded nanofibers. 37 The distance between the metallic needle and the collector differs with polymer solution, 38 and the distance influences the morphology because it is controlled by deposition time, rate of evaporation, and whipping or instability interval. 39 The spinning depends on the uniaxial stretching of the charged jet, which depends on the concentration of the polymer solution.…”

“…The membrane potentials of the PAEK-COOH membranes were measured in potassium chloride (KCl) solutions through a method as described in literatures. 9,20,21 The membranes (area of 10.4 cm 2 ) were clamped between two self-made polyamide half-cells with volume of 95 cm 3 using silicone rubber rings. KCl solutions with the concentrations of 1 Â 10 À3 mol/L, 2 Â 10 À3 mol/L, 3 Â 10 À3 mol/ L, 4 Â 10 À3 mol/L, 5 Â 10 À3 mol/L, 6 Â 10 À3 mol/L, and 7 Â 10 À3 mol/L were used.…”

“…In one of our previous study, an externally applied electric enhancing technique was used to modify polyethersulfone (PES) UF membrane [12]. For this method, an electric field was applied to the nascent PES membranes before the immersion precipitation phase inversion stage.…”
