The performance of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as selective packing material for solid-phase extraction (SPE) of residual glibenclamide in an industrial process was investigated. MIP was prepared using 4-vinylpyridine as monomer, ethylenedimethacrylate as cross linker, 2,2’-azobis-2-methylpropionitrile as initiator and dimethyl formamide as porogen. Use of acetonitrile as a rebinding solvent allows good recognition of the glibenclamide template. It was found that this polymer can be used for determination of trace levels of glibenclamide with a recovery percentage that could reach 87.1 %. Furthermore, the synthesized MIP showed higher selectivity towards glibenclamide than other compounds such as glimepiride and metformine. The synthesized MIP enabled direct determination of the target contaminant after an enrichment step that allowed quantification of glibenclamide at a concentration as low as 0.016 mg L-1. Combination of high performance liquid chromatography with MIP-SPE could be successfully used for quality control of pharmaceuticals during the cleaning process in the production of dry drug forms.

ResumoOs polímeros de impressão molecular são materiais sintéticos dotados de sítios específicos de reconhecimento. Esses materiais são obtidos por reações de polimerização que fixam, estrategicamente, monômeros funcionais ao redor de uma molécula modelo de acordo com os grupos ligantes e com a estereoquímica de ambas as moléculas. Os MIPs têm sido amplamente empregados em procedimentos de preparo de amostras, como extração e microextração em fase sólida, extração sortiva em barra de agitação, extração com adsorvente magnético, microextração com sorvente empacotado, entre outras. Este artigo de revisão tem como objetivo apresentar o que há de mais recente no emprego de MIP para extração de compostos orgânicos, evidenciando as vantagens de cada aplicação, bem como as mais promissoras tendências que sustentam a evolução e o aperfeiçoamento de cada técnica. The MIPs have been extensively used in several applications with emphasis for sample preparation procedures as solid phase extraction, solid phase microextraction, extraction by magnetic sorbents, microextraction by packed sorbent among others. So, the objective of this review is to present the novelty in MIP use for organic compounds extraction and point out the advantages of each application, as well as what is most promising in the evolution and improvement of each technique.

Volatile phenols depletion in red wine using molecular imprinted polymers

Wines can be modified by microorganisms during the ageing process, by producing off-flavours like volatile phenols (VP), leading to their deterioration, with great economic losses. The development of methods to recover wines affected by unwanted VP became an important target. Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic materials with artificiallygenerated recognition sites for selective extraction of organic compounds from different matrices. In this work, two MIPs to remove unwanted VP from wines were developed and their effects were evaluated. Volatile compounds were determined by GC-FID and GC-IT/MS and phenolic compounds (non-coloured and anthocyanins) by HPLC-DAD. The treatment with MIP-4EG and MIP-4EP significantly reduced the content of 4-ethylguaiacol and 4-ethylphenol, respectively. Nevertheless, the changes observed in wine non-coloured and coloured phenolics and sensorial analysis indicate that their specificity and selectivity regarding off-flavours still needs to be improved.
