Preparation, characterization and in vitro assessment of ibuprofen loaded calcium phosphate/gypsum bone cements

Abstract: In the present study, pure and mixed calcium phosphate/ gypsum cements were prepared and characterized. Characterizations were performed using X-ray diffraction FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the materials were studied and it was found that they depend with the gypsum content. Bioactivity tests after incubation in 2xSBF solution revealed dense apatite structure on the samples containing α-tricalcium phosphate while the … Show more

“…All these criteria are well met by CaPs and their composites. In order to make the implant antibacterial, various antibiotics have been incorporated in CaPs [ 510 , 511 , 525 ], for example, gentamicin [ 591 , 592 , 593 , 594 , 595 , 596 ], ibuprofen [ 597 , 598 ], cephalothin [ 593 ], amoxicillin [ 593 ], tobramycin [ 593 ], zoledronate [ 599 ], aspirin [ 600 ], flomoxef sodium [ 601 ], tetracycline [ 602 , 603 ], vancomycin [ 604 , 605 ], streptomycin [ 606 ], etc. Tetracylines have a broad spectrum of antibiotic action and, therefore, are attractive candidates.…”

“…The sharp peaks present at 2θ values of 26.1º, 28.2º, 31.9º, 33.2º, 34.4º, and 40.1º were attributed to the HAP (002), (210), (211), (300), (202) and (212) planes, respectively. 51 The pure HAP phase diffractograms were showed with its JCPDS card number 9-0432. A slight undergoing deviation in positions of planes and the decrease in crystalline nature were observed when the lanthanide trivalent cations were substituted on the Ca 2+ ion's matrix.…”

“…All prepared gypsum presents a very similar XRD peak patterns (assigning 020, 021, and 041 planes) with the strongest peaks locating at 11.6 theta degree, which is typical crystallite gypsum (JCPDS: 000210816) and agrees well with our theoretical XRD calculations (Figure S1) using the general scattering equation. 40 In addition, slight shifts of scattering angles were also observed for all crystallite gypsum prepared at different temperatures indicating the variations of crystallite lattice parameters of the prepared gypsum. Although XRF analysis (Table S2) indicates the impurities, the XRD spectra hardly show the crystallite impurities in the matrix of crystallite gypsum.…”
