Preparation and tribological properties of graphene oxide/nano-MoS2 hybrid as multidimensional assembly used in the polyimide nanocomposites

Abstract: A three-step strategy was employed to prepare a self-lubricating and anti-wear graphene oxide/nano-MoS2 (GO/nano-MoS2, abbreviated GMS) hybrid by chemical compounding as a novel multidimensional assembly.

“…To confirm the SEM observation of no damage on the steel substrate, profiler scans were taken and interferograms were constructed which are presented in Supplemental Information Figure S3 . In stark contrast, other state of the art GO based coatings were observed to show significant wear in the range of 1–30 × 10 −6 mm 3 /N m 25 , 33 , 34 on the discs. The estimated Archard wear rate for the respective counterface balls in both ambient and dry N 2 conditions shown in Fig.…”

“…In recent years, many studies have confirmed that nano-hybrid materials can fully take advantage of various fillers and enhance the tribological properties of lubricating oil, polymers, and other materials [24][25][26]. Xin et al [27] prepared a self-lubricating graphene oxide/nano-MoS 2 hybrid using a three-step method and discussed the synergistic effect of self-lubricating and anti-wear properties of the hybrid. Results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate of the base oil decreased by 25% and 64%, respectively, after the addition of nanocomposites.…”

“…Due to its lamellar shape made of individual atomically thin planes that can easily slide against each other [ 36 ], molybdenum disulphide (MoS 2 ) has been successfully used as a solid lubricant. MoS 2 can work, alone or with other additives, in different environments, such as: polymeric composites based on PEEK [ 37 , 38 ], ABS [ 39 ], PI [ 40 ] and PA [ 19 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ]; liquid lubricants [ 45 , 46 , 47 ] or coatings [ 48 , 49 , 50 ], showing promising results in terms of improving friction coefficient and wear rate.…”

“…In many of the studies found in the literature, the polymer composites are formed by a combination of several nanoadditives mixed in the same matrix, such as PA12-graphene-paraffine oil in [ 26 ]; PEEK-ZrO 2 -Ni in [ 34 ]; PEEK-graphene-WS 2 -CNT in [ 29 ]; PI-MoS 2 -graphene in [ 40 ]; PA6-TiO 2 -MoS 2 in [ 41 ]; PPSK-graphite-PFTE in [ 51 ].…”
