Preparation and Properties of Polyester‐Based Nanocomposite Gel Coat System

Abstract: Nanocomposite gel coat system is prepared using unsaturated polyester resin with aerosil powder, CaCO 3 , and organoclay. The influence of organoclay addition on mechanical and water barrier properties of gel coat system is studied for different amount (1, 2, and 3 wt %) of organoclay. The nanolevel incorporation of organoclay improves the mechanical and water barrier properties of nanocomposite gel coat system. The nanocomposite gel coat system exhibits 55% improvement in tensile modulus and 25% improvement i… Show more

“…On the other hand, Marras, Kladi, Tsivintzelis, Zuburtikudis, and Panayiotou (2008) reported that the elongation of poly (e-caprolactone) (PCL) was not impaired by MMT. Other authors observed improved mechanical properties of several polymers by addition of nanoclays (Avella et al, 2005;Chen & Evans, 2005;Cyras, Manfredi, Ton-That, & Váz-quez, 2008;Jawahar & Balasubramanian, 2006;Mangiacapra et al, 2006;Russo, Nicolais, Di Maio, Montesano, & Incarnato, 2007;Yu, Lin, Yeh, & Lin, 2003).…”

“…Indeed, many studies have reported the effectiveness of nanoclays in decreasing oxygen (Bharadwaj et al, 2002;Cabedo et al, 2004;Cava, Giménez, Gavara, & Lagaron, 2006;Koh et al, 2008;Lagaron et al, 2005;Lotti et al, 2008;Mangiacapra, Gorrasi, Sorrentino, & Vittoria, 2006;Petersson & Oksman, 2006a) and water vapor permeabilities (Bharadwaj, 2001;Jawahar & Balasubramanian, 2006;Lotti et al, 2008;Mangiacapra et al, 2006).…”

“…For the nanopapers infused with the polyester resin, the decomposition temperature decreases, occurring in the range of 230e294 C. The introduce of particles into the resin may affect the curing process; the cross-link density between unsaturated polyester resin molecules probably decreases [16,17]. The decomposition temperature of CNF/APP slightly increases with the addition of clay in the hybrid paper, but a significant increase in charring is observed.…”

“…Jawahar et al [13] studied the influence of organoclay addition on the mechanical, thermal and water properties of the gel coat system with unsaturated polyester resin, using the mechanical shear mixing process. Mohan et al [14] investigated the effect of addition of the nanoclay to epoxy based composites.…”
