Polyamide 6 (PA6)-based composites are of evolving interest due to its high strength, wear resistance, and barrier properties. The use of binary composites mostly with nanomaterial and glass fibers has been reviewed and presented in literature. However to obtain a balance of properties like stiffness, toughness, and strength along with cost reduction, ternary composites of PA6 have been designed. To achieve the balance, PA6 blend-based composites, with combination of microfiller/nanofiller or PA6 with combination micro-microfiller, PA6 with microfiller/nanofiller and fiber have been designed. The properties of PA6-based ternary hybrid composites depend on type of dispersed phase used, presence of compatibilizer, type of filler used (nanofiller or microfiller or fiber or hybrid) and combination of fillers used. However, a review in this direction is not available in literature. In this work, PA6/PA66/GNP thermal composites were prepared via a melt blending method. Mechanical properties, morphology and thermal properties of PA6/PA66/GNP composites were investigated. The thermal conductivity of composite containing 50 wt-% of graphene nanoplatelets was measured as 5·03 W m -1 K -1 at 30°C. When the Al 2 O 3 was replaced for graphene nanoplatelets, the thermal conductivity of composites decreased, but the mechanical properties improved. The optimum amount of Al 2 O 3 which replaced graphene nanoplatelets is 10%. When graphite was used to replace for graphene nanoplatelets, thermal conductivity basically remained unchanged but mechanical properties decreased.

In this study, we used lithium chloride (LiCl) as a modifier to decrease the melting temperature (T m) of polyamide 6 (PA6), and then, we fabricated wood‐fiber‐reinforced PA6–polypropylene (PP) blend composites via hot pressing. From crystallization analysis, the composites exhibited a lower T m and a lower processing temperature compared to PA6. Color and Fourier transform infrared analyses showed that severe thermal degradation and discoloration of the composites could be prevented by the incorporation of LiCl. LiCl had positive effects on the mechanical properties of the final product and the interfacial compatibility among PA6, PP, and wood fiber. The flexural strength increased by 8.5%. In addition, both maleic anhydride grafted PP and wood fiber improved the mechanical properties. The flexural strengths increased by 7.9 and 40%, respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl.
