RESUMOA jurema-preta (Mimosa tenuiflora), espécie abundante no semiárido brasileiro, tem potencial para a produção de taninos, havendo a necessidade de pesquisas que indiquem as melhores formas de aplicação dos mesmos. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a qualidade dos taninos da jurema-preta para a produção de adesivo tanino formaldeído com o período de coleta da planta. Foram realizadas coletas de casca nos meses de agosto e dezembro de 2008 e em abril e agosto de 2009, na Fazenda Lameirão, Santa Terezinha, Paraíba, sendo coletadas 10 plantas por período, totalizando 40 plantas. As cascas foram retiradas do tronco e galhos de diâmetro de até 3,0 cm, moídas em moinho de facas e classificadas em peneiras e empregadas para a extração de taninos, partículas inferiores a 1,0 x 2,0 cm e superiores a 0,2 x 0,2 cm. Os extratos tânicos para a produção de adesivos foram extraídos em água destilada em uma autoclave na temperatura de ebulição da água à pressão atmosférica, concentrados por evaporação ao ar livre e mantidos em estufa a 70 ± 3ºC, até a completa evaporação da umidade. Foram avaliados o teor de sólidos totais, índice de Stiasny e teor de taninos condensados nas cascas. Para produzir os adesivos, foi realizada a sulfitação ácida dos taninos obtidos. Houve influência do período de coleta das plantas no teor de taninos condensados. Foi encontrado nos adesivos produzidos com os taninos de jurema-preta, valor de teor sólido semelhante aos da acácia-negra (Acacia mearnsii), não havendo diferença significativa entre os períodos de coleta para o teor sólidos e tempo de gelatinização dos adesivos. Porém, o período de coleta influenciou o pH e a viscosidade dos adesivos. Os adesivos produzidos tiveram viscosidade elevada, indicando a necessidade de pesquisas para a melhoria dos mesmos. Abstract. The objective of this research was to develop ecological adhesives for bonding plywood panels using lignosulfonates, a common waste product of the wood pulp industry, and natural tannin extracted from Moroccan bark of Acacia mollissima using different process. Natural tannin and lignin were used in wood adhesives formulation to substitute resins based on phenol and formaldehyde. To achieve this, the lignosulfonates were glyoxalated to enhance their reactivity and the used tannins obtained by three different extraction methods were compared with commercial mimosa tannin. The proportion of Acacia mollissima tannins and lignosulfonates, the pressing time, the pressing temperature, and the pressure used were studied to improve mechanical properties, and bonding quality of plywood panel. The properties of plywood panels produced with these adhesives were tested in accordance with normative tests. Thus, the tensile strength, and the shear strength were measured. The results showed that the performance of the plywood panels made using biobased tannin adhesives was influenced by physical conditions such as pressure, press temperature as well as by chemical conditions, such as the tannin-lignin ratio. It exhibited excellent mechanical properties comparable to commercially available phenol-formaldehyde plywood adhesives. This study showed that biobased adhesives formulations presented good and higher mechanical performance and no formaldehyde emission.

Increasing global energy crisis and scarcity of petroleum resources has shifted focus of chemical industries to look for alternative raw material resources. The main focus of raw materials in wood adhesives, such as petroleum and natural gas [1] [2], would be gradually replaced by renewable biopolymers. Starch is a relatively inexpensive and renewable product from abundant plants, easy processing and it has been extensively used as binders, sizing materials, glues and pastes [3], but its bonding capacity is not strong enough to glue wood [4]. Extensive research has been carried out on improving the cohesive properties, especially water resistance, of starch-based adhesives. In starch-based wood adhesive many new approaches have come forward for effective use it in wood/wood composite adhesive giving comparable performance as synthetic adhesives. This review of starch-based adhesives is made with the focus on starch modification methods for improving properties of starch-based adhesives.
