Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a novel surface treatment process to produce thick, dense metal oxide coatings, especially on light metals, primarily to improve their wear and corrosion resistance. The coating manufactured from the PEO process is relatively superior to normal anodic oxidation. It is widely employed in the fields of mechanical, petrochemical, and biomedical industries, to name a few. Several investigations have been carried out to study the coating performance developed through the PEO process in the past. This review attempts to summarize and explain some of the fundamental aspects of the PEO process, mechanism of coating formation, the processing conditions that impact the process, the main characteristics of the process, the microstructures evolved in the coating, the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating, and the influence of environmental conditions on the coating process. Recently, the PEO process has also been employed to produce nanocomposite coatings by incorporating nanoparticles in the electrolyte. This review also narrates some of the recent developments in the field of nanocomposite coatings with examples and their applications. Additionally, some of the applications of the PEO coatings have been demonstrated. Moreover, the significance of the PEO process, its current trends, and its scope of future work are highlighted.

In this study, Ti-6Al-4V alloy samples were processed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in phytic acid (H12Phy) electrolytes with the addition of different concentrations of EDTA-MgNa2 (Na2MgY) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). The surface characterization and cytocompatibility of MAO-treated samples were evaluated systematically. H12Phy is a necessary agent for MAO coating formation, and the addition of Na2MgY and KOH into the electrolytes increases the surface roughness, micropore size and Mg contents in the coatings. The MAO coatings are primarily composed of anatase, rutile, MgO and Mg3(PO4)2. Magnesium (Mg) ions in the electrolytes enter into MAO coatings by diffusion and electromigration. The MAO coatings containing 2.97 at% Mg show excellent cell viability, adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, extracellular matrix (ECM) mineralization and collagen secretion, but the cytocompatibility of the MAO coatings containing 6.82 at% Mg was the worst due to the excessively high Mg content. Our results revealed that MAO coatings with proper Mg contents improve the cytocompatibility of the Ti-6Al-4V alloys and have large potential in orthopedic applications.

Thanks to a considerable number of fascinating properties, titanium (Ti) and Ti alloys play important roles in a variety of industrial sectors. However, Ti and Ti alloys could not satisfy all industrial requirements; the degradation of Ti and Ti alloys always commences on their surfaces in service, which declines the performances of Ti workpieces. Therefore, with aim to further improve their mechanical, corrosion and biological properties, surface modification is often required for Ti and Ti alloys. This article reviews the technologies and recent developments of surface-modification methods with respect to Ti and Ti alloys, including mechanical, physical, chemical, and biochemical technologies. Conventional methods have limited improvement in the properties and/or restriction on the geometry of workpieces. Therefore, many advanced surfacemodification technologies have emerged in recent decades. New methods make Ti and Ti alloys have better performance and extended applications. With requirement of high surface properties in future. Understanding the mechanism in various surface-modification methods, combining the advantages of current technologies and developing new coating materials with high performance are required urgently. As such, incorporation of different surface-modification technologies with high-performance modified layers may be the mainstream of surface modifications for Ti and Ti alloys. . His current research interests focus on the metal additive manufacturing (e.g., selective laser melting, electron beam melting), titanium alloys and composites, and processing-microstructureproperties in high-performance materials.
