Preparation and Evaluation of Some Homo and Copolymeric Emulsions for Latex Paint Applications

Abstract: Emulsion homopolymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and emul sion copolymerization of VAc with butyl acrylate (BuA) using potassium persulfate-acetone sodium bisulfite as a developed redox pair initiation system were investigated. The rate of copolymerization decreased with increasing BuA content. The copolymer compositions were determined by H1 NMR analysis and the reactivity ratios for VAc and BuA were calculated using the Fine man-Ross equation and found to be r1 = 0.21 and r2 = 3.3 respectively. The prepare… Show more

“…Jourdan et al40 and Kong et al41 have confirmed that in batch processes a core–shell type structure is formed with a BA‐rich core and a VA‐rich shell. Other works have focused on kinetic aspects of this copolymerization, especially on the evaluation of apparent reactivity ratios 44, 45…”

“…Our database search identified three exterior paints that contain persulfate compounds in concentrations of less than 1%. Persulfate compounds are used to prepare the latex polymers in latex‐based paint products 26 . We could not find any cases of persulfate allergy associated with paint exposure.…”

“…The formation of latices by emulsion polymerization has been the subject of a number of research papers[1, 2, 3]. Latices in use today are derived from the free‐radical initiation addition polymerization of unsaturated monomers of vinyl or maleic type.…”
