Preparation and evaluation of hemicellulose films and their blends

Abstract: Cell wall hemicelluloses are useful in various industries due to their ability to form edible and biodegradable films with plasticizerssuch as glycerol. The objective of this research was toextract hemicelluloses from Caesalpina pulcherrima and Tamarindus indica, produce film blends from them, and evaluate their properties and their product development potential. The extraction process providedyields of 25% galactomannan (GalCp) from C. pulcherrimaand 20% xyloglucan (XilTi) from T. indica. The apparentM w obta… Show more

“…The thickness of the films ranged from 0.035 mm to 0.040 mm, showing the uniformity of the films produced in this work. Thickness control is necessary to ensure the uniformity, precision and accuracy of the film-making process [5]. The increase in hemicellulose concentration did not cause an increase in film thickness, which may indicate that the drying process was uniform for all samples in removing entrapped water.…”

“…Recently, consumer demand for healthier, safer and natural products has increased [1][2][3]. Consequently, in recent years, there has been growing interest in the development of materials from natural polymers, particularly those obtained from renewable resources [4,5]. Biopolymers isolated from plant-biomass, such as agricultural waste, are the usual alternative source of fillers for composites, biodegradable packaging and biomedical engineering materials, among others [1,6].…”

“…By comparing different hemicelluloses, xyloglucan was found to present lower viscosity than galactomannan, resulting from its lower molecular weight and its higher amount of substituted glucose [ 63 ]. As a consequence of these molecular properties, the critical concentration of dilute xyloglucan solution is considerably higher than that of galactomannan, i.e., more concentration of xyloglucan would be needed to provide steric and frictional interactions between neighbouring polymer coils.…”

“…Thus, it is particularly important to research a safe, cheap, antimicrobial, and biodegradable polymer film as a food packing material. Among all of the degradable polymers, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Chitosan (CS) have aroused rising interest for their film-forming properties and prominent biocompatibility [5,6].…”
