Preparation and characterization of zeolite beta–polyurethane composite membranes

Abstract: Incorporation of zeolite into polyurethane (PU) membranes was investigated by using as-synthesized and calcined zeolite beta particles at two different loading contents (0.1 and 1 wt %). The chemical interaction between the zeolite beta crystals and PU was observed by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The SEM results suggested that the calcined zeolite beta crystals were more homogeneously dispersed in the composite membranes than the assynthesized zeolite beta crystals. DMA results demonstrated that all composite membra… Show more

“…Polyurethanes are relatively polar polymers and can interact with the polar groups of cellulose, leading to good interfacial adhesion, which is essential for enhanced mechanical properties (Aksoy et al 2007). PU-MFC composite materials were prepared recently using a film stacking method in which the PU films and non-woven cellulose fibril mats were stacked and compression moulded (Seydibeyoglu and Oksman 2008).…”

“…A similar behavior was noticed by other researchers in the case of the introduction of nanosilica particles. It was suggested that the modification agent used in the nano-silica particles was acting as softer in the macromolecular chains of the polymers [17,47]. The value of tand at T g depends not only on the concentration of the polyimide segments in the composite, but also on polymer chain interactions.…”

“…Other studies show that the introduction of zeolites into polymers can improve some of their properties. Zeolites offer different parameters (Si/Al ratio, ion-exchange properties) that can be used as tools for tailoring the properties of the composite membranes [17][18][19][20][21]. Zeolite-containing polypyrrole or polyaniline composites were prepared and characterized.…”

“…They have been utilized as a reinforcing material to improve various polymer including starch (Dufresne and Vignon, 1998), polyvinyl alcohol (Bhatnagar and Sain, 2005), chitosan (Nordqvist et al, 2007), and polyurethane (Aksoy et al, 2007).…”
