Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol-gelatin hydrogel membranes for biomedical applications

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to design and develop hydrogels by esterification of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with gelatin. The membranes were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry. The viscosity of the esterified product (as solution) was compared with the mixture of PVA and gelatin of the same composition. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels were characterized by tensile tests. Swelling behavior and hemocompatibi… Show more

“…The peak at 2900 cm -1 belonged to C-H stretching. The peaks at 1125 and 1200 cm -1 were attributed to C-O stretching and O-H in-plane bending coupled vibrations (Kondo 1997;Pal et al 2007). As expected, the xylanase-assisted oxygen delignification did not cause significant changes to the chemical structure of the cellulose of the pulps.…”

“…In general, the higher the % age swelling, the higher is the amount of water imbibed and the higher is the diffusion rate of the solute, though other factors, viz., micro-architecture of the polymer chain, may also play an important role. Experimentally, % age swelling can be determined by weight difference method and is expressed by the following equation [18]:…”

“…The double cell diffusion apparatus can be either vertical or horizontal (Figs 1 and 2). At any time t, the concentration values in the two chambers can be used to calculate the diffusion coefficient, D, of the drug in the hydrogel from the following equation [18,20]:…”

“…Thus, PVA is being used in food, biomedical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. [25][26][27] In addition to these properties, PVA has the ability to form nanofibers. 28,29 In this communication, we report the electrospinning of PVA-EA blends and their characterization.…”
