Preparation and Characterization of Polyvinyl Alcohol-Chitosan Composite Films Reinforced with Cellulose Nanofiber

Abstract: In this study microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was oxidized by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation. The treated cellulose slurry was mechanically homogenized to form a transparent dispersion which consisted of individual cellulose nanofibers with uniform widths of 3–4 nm. Bio-nanocomposite films were then prepared from a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-chitosan (CS) polymeric blend with different TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN) contents (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt %) via the s… Show more

“…The stretching vibration of C═O group, the C─O stretching vibration, and the C─C stretching vibration were also observed at 1732, 1038, and 826 cm −1 , respectively. The characteristic vibration peaks of virgin PVA were found in the similarity to previous reports . As shown in Figure , a noticeable decrease in the intensity of O─H stretching and C═O stretching peak was found in composite film.…”

“…reported increasing keratin amount in PVA solution leads to increasing tensile strength from 5.59 to 6.71 MPa that is close to our results. Choo et al . showed that the tensile strength is enhanced with an increase in PVA/CS mass ratio, which could be attributed to intermolecular interactions caused by the hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl oxygen atoms in PVA and NH 2 or OH groups in CS.…”
