Preparation and characterization of macroporous poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐based biomaterials: Water sorption property and in vitro blood compatibility

Abstract: A semi-interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) comprising gelatin and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) was prepared and characterized by FTIR, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. The water sorption potential of the prepared semi-IPNs was investigated for varying chemical architecture of the IPN, and experimental conditions such as pH, temperature and ionic strength of the swelling media. The semi-IPNs were also judged for in vi… Show more

“…After incubation, the material was fixed in 2.5% gluteraldehyde aqueous solution for 10 min and kept in a 70% ethanol solution in order to avoid dehumidification and microorganism proliferation. The amount and morphology of adhered platelets were analyzed by SEM [21].…”

“…Scanning electron microscopy ℃ (SEM, JSM-6320F, Japan) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM, Hitachi H-7010A, Japan) were applied to observe the size and morphology of microspheres. The hydrodynamic radius (R h ) and size distribution of microspheres determined by laser light scattering (LLS, ALV-5000, Germany) at 25 with laser wavelength of 632. ℃ 8 nm, scattering angle 90° were simulated by the non-linear simulation CONTIN.…”

“…Graft copolymer microspheres are widely used in many fields such as the catalyst carrier, 23 drug delivery system 24 and biomedicine 25 due to their well-modified surface structure and good dispersion stability. The microspheres can be prepared through soap-free emulsion copolymerization, 26 dispersion copolymerization 27 and so on.…”

“…Therefore, higher absorbance values indicate improved thromboresistance of material. In the present thrombogenicity assay, the blood solutions obtained after 10,20,30,40, and 50 min were diluted to half of its concentration and the corresponding absorbance values are shown in Figure 6.…”

“…Thrombus formation and rupture of red blood cell (RBC) are two major concerns in the blood compatibility of a material. 30 Thrombus formation and RBC rupture due to PADMA membranes were evaluated by thrombogenicity assay and hemolysis assay, respectively. Diffusion experiments were carried out with PADMA membranes, taking salicylic acid (SA) as a model drug.…”
