Preparation and Characterization of Gamma Radiation Cured Gelatin-PVA Bio-Blend

Abstract: Gelatin-PVA blend films of different compositions (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% of PVA) were prepared by casting. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (Eb) of the films were studied. The TS and Eb of pure gelatin films were found to be 32 MPa and 3.3% respectively. The films were irradiated under different gamma radiation dose (50 Krad, 100 Krad, 150 Krad, 250 Krad, 500 Krad). 5% PVA containing gelatin films irradiated under 100 Krad gamma radiation showed highest TS of 42 MPa and highest Eb of 4.2%. Thermal… Show more

“…There are plenty of examples in the literature that corroborate the efficiency of radiation application on natural films, like those made of zein, the protein found in maize [51]. Different types of gelatin-based films with enhanced properties can be produced by means of application of ionizing radiation [52,53].…”

“…Furthermore, Jain et al [54] reported that a high ratio of PVA to a lower concentration of gelatin could increase the TS of fabricated film. Lastly, Khan et al [56] reported that the highest TS is at 100 Krad but with the lowest PVA concentration of 5%. The Eb of the highest content of PVA will be the lowest percentage.…”

“…Increasing the dosage of gamma irradiation increases the intensity of the peaks followed by an increased gelatin concentration. Finally, Khan et al [56] reported that grafted film does not show any peak characteristic corresponding to the carbonyl group and amino group, hence indicating a complete crosslinking through these functional groups.…”
