Preparation and Characterization of CarboxymethylCellulose Hydrogel Fibers

Abstract: Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel fibers were prepared via a solution spinning method with aluminum sulfate as the crosslinking agent. The preparation process of the CMC hydrogel fibers was optimized via orthogonal experiments. FTIR, POM, SEM and TGA were used to characterize the structure and properties of the hydrogel fibers. The mechanical properties and absorption ability of the hydrogel fibers were also investigated. The results indicated that an even structure was formed in the hydrogel. The mechani… Show more

“…The FT-IR spectrum for CMC crosslinked by Al-salt (CMC-Al) shows the presence of the carboxyl groups (-COOH) at 1618 cm −1 [42]. The absorption peak of the carboxyl groups is shifted to higher wavenumbers due to the crosslinking with aluminum [43]. The absorbtion peak of carboxyl groups for pure CMC is at 1586 cm −1 .…”

“…The rheological properties of the spinning solution have great influence on processability, spinning process, and quality index of finished fibers. 10,31,32 Figure 3 shows the effect of shear rates on viscosity of blend solutions. It was indicated that the viscosity values of the four samples all decrease with increasing shear rate.…”

“…7,8 Alginate fibers have been found in many applications in the biomedical fields, such as dressings to treat crush injury because of their good bio-compatibility, biodegradability, and hygroscopicity. 9,10 However, the low mechanical strength greatly restricted the application of alginate fibers. Nanofillers such as carbon black, silica, carbon nanotube, grapheme, and nanosized cellulose have been used to improve the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites.…”

“…The hydrogel film was formed due to the crosslinking function between Al 3+ and carboxyl groups of CMC. 15 The hydrogel obtained from this research is a thin transparent film and flexible. Meanwhile, the higher concentration of glycerol used for the production of hydrogel is easier to break.…”
