Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Terbium Complex Coordinated with 10-Undecenoic Acid for UV-Cured Coatings

Abstract: A UV-cured composite containing a rare earth complex was prepared for this study. First, the photoluminescent terbium complex was synthesized with a long-chain unsaturated fatty acid (10-Undecenoic acid) by a solution precipitation method, resulting in the 10-UA-Tb(III) complex. Its structure was proven by FTIR, elemental analysis, XRD, and TGA. The results indicated that the organic acid ligand successfully coordinated with the Tb 3+ ion and that the complex had a chelate bidentate structure. The emission spe… Show more

“…These two new absorption bands [due to m asym(COOÀ) and m sym(COOÀ) ] with a stretching frequency difference of less than 225 cm À1 in IR spectra of complexes imply the bidentate chelation mode of the carboxylate group of ligand (L) with the terbium(III) ion. 16,17 The linkage of ligand (L) to the trivalent terbium ion through -OH of the carboxylate group is supported by the disappearance of broad band (at 3443 cm À1 in IR spectrum of the uncoordinated ligand (L) in IR spectra of ternary complexes. In the binary complex, the band at 3416 cm À1 is due to coordinated water molecules in the first coordination scaffold.…”

“…[143] Tb 3þ is defined as a hard acid by the HSAB theory and has a varied coordination chemistry, forming complexes with 1-12 donor atoms with a preference for a coordination number of 8-9. [144] Terbium exhibits a preference for oxygen donor atoms, characteristic of the hard acid lanthanoid metal centre. According to a search of the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) database in 2021, 94 % of terbium-containing crystal structures and 87 % of all lanthanoid-containing crystal structures were reported to have at least one oxygen donor atom.…”
