Preparation and application of magnetic chitosan in environmental remediation and other fields: A review

Abstract: Magnetic chitosan has received considerable attention over the decades due to its low cost, biodegradability, green sources, magnetic intensity. In this review, we reviewed the preparation methods of magnetic chitosan using co-precipitation, cross-linking and electrochemical. Therein cross-linking methodologies involved in the reaction of amino groups are facile to introduce additional reaction groups and improve anti-swelling of chitosan layers, mostly in an acidic environment. Besides, we focused on the appl… Show more

“…In the one-step process, ferric and ferrous salts (Fe 3 O 4 ) or (γ-Fe 2 O 3 ) are dissolved in a chitosan solution by raising the pH of the solution (above 9). Then, magnetite formation and magnetite/chitosan precipitation take place simultaneously in one pot [ 75 , 76 ]. In the two-step method, the magnetic particles and the chitosan solution are prepared separately, then the magnetic particles are dispersed in the chitosan solution, followed by a precipitation step and crosslinking to finally form the magnetic chitosan.…”

“… 19 On the other hand, there are special functional groups that react with heavy metals, organics and other substances, which can be used as binding sites to improve the adsorption performance. 20 At present, magnetic chitosan materials have been studied and applied in many fields, such as environmental remediation, 21 biomedicine, 22 and petroleum exploitation. 23 …”

“…Studies on magnetic chitosan adsorption have been summarized by some scholars (see Table 1 ). Briao et al 15 focuses on the regeneration of adsorbents, Shaumbwa et al 16 on the separation of magnetic materials, and Michailidou et al 17 on the adsorption of highly toxic elements such as uranium and mercury. We focus on the adsorption of magnetic chitosan to common polluting metal ions (Cu/Pb/Cr).…”

“…Apart from the process mentioned previously, there are additional techniques for the facile one-step synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles in the chitosan matrix. Though researchers prefer the cross-linking methodology (as it enables functionalization and improves anti-swelling of chitosan layers), 114 these novel one-step methodologies need to be recognized as well as discussed below.…”
