Preoperative serum carbohydrate antigen 125 level is an independent negative prognostic marker for overall survival in colorectal cancer

Abstract: To evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative serum carbohydrate antigen19-9 (CA19-9), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) for overall survival (OS) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Preoperative serum CA19-9, CEA, and CA125 levels were detected by C12 protein chip diagnostic system in 80 patients with CRC, and the association of their preoperative status with the patients' OS was analyzed. Patients with positive preoperative serum CA19-9, CA125, and CEA had a worse … Show more

“…In the present study, serum CA242 status was significantly associated with the presence of T and N stages, nerve invasion and pTNM staging. This is consistent with previous studies that revealed that CA242 was a prognostic factor in patients with CRC (42). Similarly, in the present study serum CA19-9 and CA125 levels were significantly associated with lymph node metastasis and pTNM staging.…”

“…30 Studies have confirmed that preoperative serum CA125 is an independent prognostic factor for overall survival of colon cancer, rather than CEA. 31 Serum AFP is the most common tumor marker for HCC, following with elevated serum AFP among 2/3 of HCC patients. A markedly elevated serum AFP level usually indicates a poor prognosis of HCC.…”

“…Basbug et al (2011) evaluated the prognostic value of CEA and CA 19-9 in colorectal cancer patients and found a statistically significant relationship between positivity for both tumor markers and advanced TNM stage. Similarly, Xue-Qin Yang et al (2001) investigated the prognostic importance of preoperative CEA, CA 19-9, and CA 125 values in colorectal cancer patients and found a correlation between increased preoperative values of these parameters and advanced stage. Most of these studies appear to indicate a significant correlation between CEA and advanced stage, while only some of them show a relationship between CA 19-9 and advanced stage.…”
