Prenatal sonographic evaluation and postnatal outcome of renal anomalies

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To determine the prognosis of antenatally detected renal anomalies by sonographic evaluation.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This was a follow-up study of all antenatally detected renal anomalies from January 2008 to Dec 2009 referred to fetal medicine clinic. Prenatal evaluation was done and cases were divided into four groups depending upon their prenatal sonographic findings. Post natal follow-up was done up to one year in cases of live babies. Autopsy was carried out in still born fetus after consent.RESUL… Show more

“…UPJO is the most common cause of hydronephrosis detected antenatally. [ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 14 ] There are very few reports on the optimal mode of treatment of antenatally detected bilateral UPJO with regard to the timing of pyeloplasty. [ 9 10 11 12 ] Irrespective of the initial DRF, early pyeloplasty in prenatally diagnosed unilateral SFU Grade 3–4 UPJO has been shown to result in a significant improvement of DRF, while delayed pyeloplasty is reported to result in a marginal but significant loss.…”

“…With the advent of routine antenatal ultrasonography, the incidence of fetal hydronephrosis has increased many folds. [ 1 2 3 ] While a majority of these are transient, uretero pelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is a common cause in those with persistent hydronephrosis,. [ 3 4 ] In the vast majority of the patients with unilateral UPJO, the initial management is conservative with the surgical intervention being reserved for those with a significant deterioration in the differential renal function (DRF) on the follow-up.…”

“…El 40,3% de los niños que presentaba hidronefrosis severa posnatal (UTD P2oP3), tuvieron también alteraciones en el renograma. Estos datos reafirman el peor pronóstico de las hidronefrosis graves y concuerdan con lo publicado por autores como Ismaili (15) y Kumar (21) . Coincidimos con Perlman (22) en el hecho de que el pronóstico renal fue peor en aquellos casos en los que la HNF se asoció con otras anomalías congénitas del riñón.…”

“…When renal function is abnormal, there is oligohydramnios and the bladder is small or absent. [4] Kumar M et al .,[5] in a prospective study over a 3-year period from Jan 2008-Dec 2010, found 422 cases (1.8%) with gross congenital anomaly out of 24,160 deliveries studied. Out of the 422 cases, there were only 63 cases with renal anomaly (14.9%).…”
