Prenatal programming of adult mineral metabolism: Relevance to blood pressure, dietary prevention strategies, and cardiovascular disease

Abstract: The findings suggest that the individual variation in mineral metabolism can be predicted by 2D:4D, indicating that prenatal sex steroid action may be involved in the epigenetic programming of specific metabolic conditions which are highly relevant to adult health and disease.

“…Translating DOHaD to public health may emphasize important research methods or procedures. Among those factors, promoting wide-scale translation involves the need for large longitudinal birth cohort studies with prospective measures of broad domains of exposures and outcomes [ 4 , 12 , 35 ]. This research should reflect multi-sector collaboration [ 29 ] to collectively understand the causal mechanisms and determine the best interventions [ 36 ].…”

“…Trace minerals play an important role in the metabolism, starting from the lowest level of intracellular life extending to the functional activity of the largest organs. 2 , 3 Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is characterized by the intimal and medial proliferation of the small pulmonary arteries, which in turn leads to the development of secondary fibrotic and plexiform vascular lesions. Increased pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary arterial pressures in PH constitute a life-threatening situation owing to the increase in afterload leading to right ventricular failure.…”
