Prenatal diagnosis of right diaphragmatic eventration associated with fetal hydrops

Abstract: Congenital diaphragmatic eventration (CDE) is a rare diaphragmatic abnormality. Clinical manifestations of CDE may mimic congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Prenatal differential diagnosis of eventration is critical because postnatal managing and prognosis of these conditions vary significantly. Sonographic features of CDE involve presence of abdominal organs in the thorax, shift of cardiac axis and mediastinum. Non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) has been previously reported to be associated with intrathoracic mas… Show more

“…In recent times, fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is being increasingly performed to diagnose and prognosticate these anomalies [3,11]. Literature on antenatal diagnosis of CDE is limited to case reports [6,[12][13][14][15][16] with no previous studies directly assessing the ability of fetal MRI to differentiate CDH and CDE. Moreover, the role of fetal MRI in diagnosing CDE is not clearly established in literature.…”

“…There have been some reports on the antenatal sonographic diagnosis of fetal diaphragmatic eventration. [4][5][6][7][8] However, those sonographic image qualities for diagnosing diaphragmatic eventration were poor. Moreover, the differentiation between congenital diaphragmatic eventration and hernia was very difficult using conventional prenatal sonography.…”
