Fish passages in South America: an overview of studied facilities and research effort

River regulation has fragmented fluvial ecosystems in South America, affecting fish migration and dispersion dynamics. In response, authorities have installed fish passage facilities (FPF) to mitigate impacts. However, little is known about the geographical distribution of these facilities, and no synthesis of the research effort applied to understanding their functioning and limitations exists. To address this issue, our study gathered the available scientific literature about fishways in South America to provide an overview of studied FPF and associated research effort. We found 80 studies that investigated 25 FPF, mostly ladders installed in the upper reaches of large rivers, particularly in the Paraná River Basin. One important finding is that most facilities do not lead to upstream and/or downstream sites due to the presence of other dams with no FPF. Though the number of studies has increased over the past 10 years, there is no consistent trend towards increased research effort. Overall, studies have focused on the fishway itself (i.e. upstream passage), and rarely evaluated broader issues (i.e. habitat distribution, population dynamics, conservation and management success). Our research therefore identified technical limitations of past studies, and revealed important gaps in the knowledge of FPF as a management tool.Keywords: Conservation, Dam, Fishway, Impact, Management.A implantação de barragens tem perturbado e fragmentado os ecossistemas fluviais da América do Sul, afetando a migração dos peixes e dinâmicas de dispersão. Sistemas de transposição de peixes (STPs) têm sido instalados na tentativa de atenuar esses impactos. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre a distribuição geográfica desses dispositivos, bem como o esforço de pesquisa aplicado para entender seu funcionamento e limitações. Nosso trabalho reuniu a literatura disponível com a finalidade de fornecer um panorama sobre os mecanismos investigados na América do Sul, bem como revelar o esforço e perfil das pesquisas. Encontramos 80 estudos que investigaram 25 STPs, a maioria escadas instaladas nos trechos superiores de grandes rios, particularmente na bacia do rio Paraná. Um resultado interessante é que a maior parte dos STPs está desconectada de trechos a montante e jusante devido à presença de outras barragens sem STPs. Embora o número de estudos tenha aumentado na última década, não registramos tendência consistente de incremento ao longo dos anos. No geral, os estudos abordam aspectos do próprio STP, especificamente a passagem ascendente, ignorando temas mais abrangentes (i.e. distribuição de habitats, dinâmica populacional). Além disso, o foco da pesquisa se direciona especialmente às questões de eficiência da passagem e raramente ao contexto da conservação e sucesso do manejo. Nossa avaliação, portanto, indicou que os estudos pretéritos são tecnicamente limitados, revelando importantes lacunas sobre o conhecimento dos STPs como medida de manejo.

Reservoirs have been built in almost all of the hydrographic basins of Brazil. Their purposes include water supply for cities, irrigation and mainly, generation of electricity. There are more than 700 large dams and associated reservoirs in the large rivers of the country. These reservoirs favor local and regional economic development, but they also bring serious and irreversible alterations in the natural hydrologic regime of rivers, affecting habitat quality and the dynamics of the biota. In the impounded area, the main impact is the change from lotic to lentic water, which influences aquatic fauna, including fishes. Impacts of reservoirs present relevant spatiotemporal variations. Immediately after reservoir formation, fish species richness usually increases due to incorporation of surrounding habitats, but richness decreases as reservoirs age. However, impacts downstream of dams appear to be similar or stronger than those that occur within the reservoir. Dams promote discharge control, altering the seasonal cycles of floods. These effects are augmented when dams are constructed in cascades. Therefore, dams profoundly influence composition and structure of fish assemblages. Most affected species are the rheophilics and long distance migratory that require distinct habitats to fulfill their life cycles. Populations of migratory species may collapse or even disappear in intensely regulated stretches. Management actions taken to minimize impacts of dams in Brazil historically considered construction of fish passages, fishery control and stocking. The results of these actions are questionable and/or with clear failures. In this paper, we give emphasis to the Paraná River basin, the most affected by dams in Brazil. We describe some patterns in the alteration and decline in fish diversity in areas influenced by dams. We also discuss negative consequences in the fishery and ecosystems functioning. Finally, we argue the relevance and the success of the management actions taken and present some suggestions to improve conservation of the ichthyofauna in South American basins influenced by dams.Keywords: fish diversity, dam impacts, fish management, fish conservation, Paraná River. We evaluated the seasonality of the ascent of fish in an experimental ladder located close to Itaipu Dam, and its relationships to reproduction, temperature, river level and discharge. Samplings of fish and measurements of abiotic factors were performed from February, 1995 through January, 1997, in two resting pools of the ladder. Pool A was located 10 m above the mean level of the Paraná River; Pool B was located at the upper end of the ladder, at a height of 27 m. Autoregressive models were used to remove the temporal dependence between observations. Residuals of the models were used to relate, using Pearson's correlation coefficient, the densities of fish to the environmental variables. Clear patterns of seasonality were observed for temperature. River level, turbine discharge and spillway discharge, although they showed no clear seasonal dynamics, were timedependent, because the autocorrelation coefficients for different k values were significant. In the samples of larger-sized fish, 23 species were recorded during the two years of study. Most of the individuals were in a non reproductive state, and about 90% of the individuals belonged to only six species. The temporal variability in total abundance, considering all species, indicated a pattern of seasonal variation; high abundances occurred from October through February (75%) and in Pool A (61% of the 1343 individuals sampled). Low abundances were recorded during winter, with the correlogram of total density confirming this tendency. In the samples of smaller-sized species, six species were recorded, with all six present in both pools, but more frequent in the first pool (64%). Bryconamericus stramineus comprised 99% of the total numbers of smaller fish in the samples. The total abundance of small species showed different temporal patterns of seasonal variation in the two years of study.O presente estudo avalia a sazonalidade da ascensão de peixes na escada experimental localizada junto à barragem da hidrelétrica de Itaipu e as relações com a reprodução, temperatura, nível do rio e suas vazões. As amostragens de peixes e de fatores abióticos foram obtidas de fevereiro de 1995 a janeiro de 1997, em dois tanques de descanso, aqui denominados Caixas, sendo o primeiro, Caixa A, localizado na altura de 10 m da cota média do rio Paraná, e o segundo, Caixa B, ao final da escada, a 27 m de altura. Modelos autoregressivos foram empregados com o objetivo de remover a dependência temporal entre as observações. Posteriormente, os resíduos dos modelos foram utilizados para relacionar, através do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson, as densidades de peixes com as variáveis ambientais. Padrões claros de sazonalidade foram observados para a variável temperatura. As variáveis cota, vazão turbinada e vazão vertida, embora não tenham apresentado dinâmicas sazonais claras, foram temporalmente dependentes, tendo em vista que os coeficientes de autocorrelação, para diferentes k, foram significativos.
