Preliminary study on the application of radio-telemetry techniques to evaluate movements of fish in the Lateral canal at Itaipu Dam, Brazil

Abstract: A preliminary study on the application of radio-telemetry techniques to describe the movements of fish in a bypass channel at Itaipu Dam (Paraná River), known as "Canal da Piracema," was carried out between January and February of 2004. Fourteen individuals of six species (Prochilodus lineatus, Leporinus friderici, Schizodon borellii, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, Pterodoras granulosus and Cichla kelberi) were intragastrically and surgically radiotagged and monitored by three experimental fixed radio-telemetry s… Show more

“…For example, many species recorded inside the facility may not be able to complete passage, or may not reach critical habitats upstream. In this case, studies that use telemetry (e.g., Hahn et al, 2007), mark-recapture (e.g., Antonio et al, 2007) or evaluate the distribution of critical habitats (e.g., Pelicice, Agostinho, 2008) are essential to answer these questions.…”

“…Information in this document clarified some relevant weaknesses in fish conservation, such as high selectivity and favoring the promotion of few species and not always the target ones (Agostinho et al, 2007d;Hahn et al, 2007;Makrakis et al, 2007;Oldani et al, 2007;Fernandez et al, 2007). It was also clear the difficulties in descending migration, passage through dams and the unlikely downstream drift of offspring along a reservoir body, which ultimately will reduce recruitment below dams (Agostinho et al, 2007d;Lopes et al, 2007).…”

“…The fish ladder used in this study is part of a structure developed by the Itaipu Binacional Environment and Engineering departments for the "Fish Migration Channel" experimental project (see Makrakis et al, 2007 andHahn et al, 2007). It is located downstream from Itaipu Dam, next to the tailrace of the 15th turbine (25°24'35'' S; 54°35'15'' W).…”
