Preliminary Study of the Groundwater Geochemistry in the Sub-desert Area in Morocco: Case of the Ziz-Ghris Basins

Abstract: The Tafilalet region has very significant economic advantages based on tourism and agriculture. This sub-desert area faces several challenges: water scarcity, intense evaporation, limited water resources, and intense agricultural development. The topic of this work is to study the non-exploited water resources in the study area and to try to understand their geochemistry. Water samples were collected from exploited shallow aquifers and the khettara system, and from thermal waters in order to explore for possib… Show more

“…In addition, the hydrochemical study of the underground waters in the Zizi and Guir basins, to the south of the Bou Arhous range, shows that the present-day water within the Sinemurian limestone is a calcic bicarbonate type; their extremely high silica content (up to 5000 mg/L) are interpreted as the result of a long residence time of the waters and/or an important mixture with thermal waters (Bahaj et al 2013). A local source for silica cannot be excluded too, and may even be indicated by the partial dissolution of the idiomorphic quartz crystals present in the micritic limestone (Fig.…”

“…This study is carried out on Ziz catchment located in the south-eastern part of Morocco between latitudes 29°30 'and 32°30' [25], Ziz Ghriss river channel drains an area of around 40 Km² from the north to the south, the minimal elevation is 580 masl and the maximum is 3450 masl. The intermittent streams of the studied river feed the a part of the Errachidia groundwater [25], the area has a semi-arid climate.…”

“…In the dry areas, elevated concentration of sodium and its negative influence on the ecosystem have been pointed out many times (i.a. Bahaj et al 2013, Bouchaou et al 2008, El Mandour et al 2008, Rochdane et al 2015, Dłużewski et al 2017, Latos et al 2018, Szczucińska et al 2019. The low quality of alluvial water was observed in areas where wells are located in alluvial formations.…”

“…The amount of water used for agricultural, animal breeding and industrial purposes has increased recently. Salinity of groundwater in Morocco has been investigated many times (i.a., Bahaj et al 2013, Bouchaou et al 2008, El Mandour et al 2008, Dłużewski et al 2017. Elevated concentration of sodium and its negative influence on the ecosystem have been pointed out.…”
