Preliminary screening of domestic barley and wild barley genotypes for salt tolerance

Abstract: Salinity is a critical challenge facing productivity of barley around the world, necessitating the development of salinity tolerant varieties. Screening genotypes of two barley species during germination and seedling growth stages was conducted to identify genotypes with superior performance under saline stress conditions. Five genotypes of domestic barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and six of wild barley (H. bulbosum) were used in this study. Genotypes were germinated in solutions of 0, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% NaCl (0, … Show more

“…Our work yielded similar conclusions regarding these parameters. Other studies also have not detected an association between seed germination and shoot length [47], consistent with our data (R = 0.062; p = 0.7897). On the other hand, in our experiments assessing the impact of the salt stressor, a correlation between growth characteristics before and after stress exposure was identified in all examined lines, except for win1 25-2-2 KO and win1 17-4-14 KO.…”

“…At higher concentrations (150-600 mM), weights and lengths of shoots and roots diminish [63,64]. Some barley genotypes at 342 mM did not have germinated seeds [47]. Presumably, concentrations above 150 mM induce plasmolysis in barley, by causing osmotic shock.…”

“…The economic importance of this crop is similar to that of wheat and rice, taking fourth place in quantity and area of cultivation ( Zhou, 2009 ; Dawson et al, 2015 ). This cereal is a great source of food and drink for humans, and it is also used for feeding livestock ( FAOSTAT, 2014 ; Mohammed et al, 2021 ).…”
