Seaweed farming in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is among the income-generating activities; apart from seaweeds being primary producers, they are foundation species important for marine ecosystem capable of modifying their surrounding abiotic and biotic environments. The WIO coast provides natural and necessary environments for seaweeds farming. In this review article seaweed farming in WIO was investigated; its contribution to provision of ecosystem services; medicinal and nutritional value; role of women; challenges and the wellbeing of farmers and the whole ecosystem. It was observed that among the challenges facing seaweed farmers include lack of modernized farming tools hence farmers use low depth areas leading to attack by diseases, death of seaweed, low yields, and income. Farmers has been reported to be affected by diseases which may be contributed by inadequate of use of protective gears, indicating the need for knowledge on personal protection. This may be contributed by lack of knowledge which leads to farmers participation without using protective equipment leading to contamination from toxic chemical compounds from seaweed, epiphytic bacteria or harmful algal bloom and absorbed heavy metals from seawater as a result of long-term exposure. Farming practices such as uprooting of seaweeds during farm preparation have been observed to cause degradation and decrease fish population. Therefore, there is the need for use of modern technologies; supervision of these activities by professionals in the field, and provision of knowledge to farmers for the sustainability of WIO marine ecosystem.

Anti-lice activity of Citrullus colocynthis fruits against Pediculus humanus capitis in vitro

The increasing resistance of head lice Pediculus humanus capitis to many drugs has highlighted the need for new alternatives to control head lice in adults. The effect of two types of extracts (aqueous and alcoholic) of Citrullus colocynthis fruit on adult lice was tested in vitro. The results showed that the alcoholic extract with a concentration of 20% showed similar efficacy in killing adult lice to that of Natroba 9% w/w, with values ranging between 87% to 98% within 18 minutes, followed by a 20% aqueous extract with a 44% to 79% death rate. A 10% concentration of both types of extracts had moderate lethality for lice, while a 5% concentration did not show strong lethality for adult lice. These results revealed significant differences between the control group and those treated with alcoholic and aqueous extract concentrations of C. colocynthis fruits at the probability level p ≤ 0.05.

Seaweeds are potential sources of bioactive molecules. They are known to be rich sources of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and other secondary metabolites. To evaluate the presence of these compounds in marine macroalgae collected from Veraval coast of Gujarat, present studies was carried out. The methanol extract of six macroalgae species (Ulva lactuca, Ulva faciata, Acanthophora dendroides, Gracilaria corticata, Padina tetrastromatica, and Cystoseira indica) was subjected to LCMS/MS analysis which suggested presence of amino acids, sugar, vitamins and phytohormones in algae extracts. The aminoacids and vitamins present in Ulva lactuca (betaine, Lmethionine, L-asparagine), Ulva faciata ( L-arginine, L-proline, L-histidine, Lvaline, L-Threonine, Dihydrofolic acid), Acanthophora dendroides (L-glutamic acid, L-alanine, L-serine, L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine, nicotinic acid), Gracilaria coeticata (L-canavanine, L-isoleucine, and L-cysteine) and Padina tetrastromatica (L-Aspartic acid, L-leucine) can be utilized for the development of dietary supplements and proteinaceous food for domestic animals. The sugar present in Ulva faciata (glucosamine), Acanthophora dedroides (D-xylose, Dmannose, D-fructose), Gracilaria corticata (D-Rhamnose, fucose, D-galactose), Padina tetrastromatica (D-glucuronic acid, D-glucose, D-mannuronic acid), and Cystosera indica (arabinose, maltose) can be utilized in food products, cosmetic, gelling and thickening agents. The phytohormones present in Ulva lactuca (6-Benzylaminopurine, jasmonate), Gracilaria corticata (salicylic acid, ethylene), Padina tetrastromatica (Abscisic acid), and Cystosera indica (Indole-3 acetic acid) can be utilized in agriculture as plant growth regulators. Hence, these algae species are essential raw materials for the production of various pharmaceutical and biotechnological products.
