Preliminary Material Evaluation of Flax Fibers for Prosthetic Socket Fabrication

Abstract: Composite prosthetic sockets are typically made of fiberglass or carbon fiber. These fibers have good mechanical properties, but relatively poor vibration damping. Flax fibers are claimed to have exceptional vibration damping properties, with the added benefit of being a natural, renewable resource and a cost-effective alternative to synthetic fibers. Flax fibers could prove beneficial for prosthetic sockets, providing lightweight sockets that reduce vibrations transmitted to the body during movement. This res… Show more

“…Hence, lightweight sockets made of FF could be valuable for decreasing the vibrations transmitted to the body. In a recent study, Monette et al found that the composite sockets produced completely from FF were lighter and more efficacious in reducing damping vibrations than sockets fabricated totally from CF [13].…”

“…20,21 Nowadays, natural fibers (plant, animal and agro fibers) have been reinforced with polymeric materials that may have great potential to substitute synthetic fibers for prosthetic socket applications. 22,23 The various natural fibers like ramie, 24 bamboo, 25 rattan, 26 flax, 27 kenaf, 1,28 and pineapple leaf 29,30 have been used to fabricate prosthetic sockets and results analyzed that the developed sockets have lighter weight, better specific strength and stiffness with greater flexibility. However, the biomechanical responses like stress generation, thermal effects, pressure distribution, kinetics, etc.…”
