Preliminary investigation of orally administered benazepril in horses with left‐sided valvular regurgitation

Abstract: Treatment with oral benazepril resulted in statistically significant echocardiographic changes that might indicate reduced cardiac afterload in horses with left-sided valvular regurgitation. Additional studies with a larger sample size will be necessary to determine if administration of benazepril is beneficial in horses with valvular regurgitation. The Summary is available in Spanish - see Supporting Information.

“…Plasma aldosterone concentration was determined using a commercial human-specific radioimmunoassay validated for equine samples (Active Aldosterone Radioimmunoassay, Beckman Coulter, Prague, Czech Republic) [ 43 ]. The reproducibility, measured as the intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation, was 10.2% and 9.6%, respectively; the overall accuracy was 98%.…”

“…Afonso et al, 26,27 and Broux et al, 28 address some related questions in their hypothesis‐driven investigations of benazepril and sotalol, while Mitchell, 11 in a clinical commentary on the diagnosis and treatment of ventricular tachycardia, discusses the pros and cons of several medications. Benazepril is an ACE inhibitor with potential to reduce afterload on the left ventricle.…”
