“…Despite the recent advances in the assessment and application of direct aging methodologies for crustaceans (e.g., Kilada et al , ; Sarapuk ; Kilada and Acuña ; Kilada and Ibrahim ; Krafft et al ; Leland et al 2015; Leland and Bucher ), our results suggest that caution is still required when applying these techniques. In particular, careful consideration is needed regarding the ontogenetic growth morphology of the structures used for aging different species and how this might influence the formation and location of increments relative to the section plane examined.…”

“…Until recently, the application of direct aging methods for crustaceans was not considered possible because these animals grow by molting their calcified tissues multiple times during life. Over the past few years, however, several studies have described calcified structures (eye stalks and gastric ossicles) that appear to be at least partly conserved during the molting process and that contain putative growth marks with potential utility for direct age estimation (Leland et al , ; Kilada et al , ; Kilada and Ibrahim ; Krafft et al ; Hasyima et al ; Leland and Bucher ). If direct aging of crustaceans using such structures can be validated and applied to a wide range of species, there is potential to improve our understanding of crustacean population dynamics and, thus, to increase our ability to effectively manage crustacean populations and fisheries (Kilada and Driscoll ; Leland and Bucher ).…”

“…A recent technique has recognized features assumed to be growth increments, bands or zones in the cuticle of a number of species, e.g., Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus Lin-naeus, 1758), European and American lobsters (Homarus gammarus Linnaeus, 1758 andH. americanus H. Milne Edwards, 1837), a deep-water shrimp (Pandalus borealis Krøyer, 1838) and the blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus, 1758) (Leland et al, 2011(Leland et al, , 2015Kilada et al, 2012Kilada et al, , 2015Kilada and Ibrahim, 2016). Calcein-staining experiments performed by Kilada et al (2012) indicated that the cuticle of the eyestalk appears to be shed but the stain is still retained in the postmolt eyestalk.…”

“…After four days, the gastric mill were separated between mesocardiac ossicles and zygocardiac ossicles, cleaned from excess tissues and embedded in Buehler epoxy resin. Both ossicles were then prepared for transverse sectioning between 150 and 300 μm thicknesses using Buehler Isomet Precision Saw [10], [11]. Both ossicles were mounted on slides and viewed under an Olympus microscope, while images were taken using DinoCapture software and digitally enhanced using Adobe Photoshope.…”
