Preliminary assessment of the β-dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) content of macroalgae from the tropical island of Hainan (People's Republic of China)

Abstract: The β-dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) contents of 46 macroalgal species from the tropical island of Hainan, People's Republic of China, were determined by gas-liquid phase chromatography. In almost all investigated green, brown and red algal species, DMSP could be detected. The highest concentrations were measured in members of the green algal order Ulvales, and these were similar to those of isolates from polar and temperate regions. The tropical Ulvales from Hainan are comparable in their DMSP contents wit… Show more

“…Generally brown algae were found to produce little or no DMSP depending on the detection limit in the respective studies (see e.g. Reed, 1983;Karsten et al, 1990;Bischoff et al, 1994). In accordance with these studies, D. dichotoma used in our experiment released low concentrations of DMS after wounding (up to 50 mg DMS g -1 ; Table 1).…”

“…To examine the distribution and abundance of DMSP across geographic regions and taxa of marine macroalgae, we compiled data from several surveys of DMSP concentrations that were conducted throughout the world in which DMSP concentrations were reported on a dry mass (DM) basis (Bischoff et al, 1994;Erickson et al, 2006;Karsten et al, 1994;Lyons et al, unpublished data;Van Alstyne, unpublished data;Van Alstyne et al, 2001). The data were sorted into 8 large-scale geographic regions based on delineations of Cox and Moore (1993) and Briggs (1974) to look at the abundance of DMSP on a global scale.…”

“…DMSP concentrations in the Ulvales were more uniformly high with concentrations in 14 of the 15 species being at least 48 mmol g -1 DM. The only exception was the tropical chlorophyte Ulva conglobata (0.3 mmol g -1 DM; Bischoff et al, 1994).…”

“…Red and brown algae contained almost the same very low concentrations of DMSP, whereas green algae showed up to 1000 -fold higher values. These distributions are typical and reported for a wide range of polar and tropical macroalgae [compare Karsten et al, 1994;Bischoff et al, 1994]. Thus, a formation of methyl halides by DMSP seems unlikely.…”
