“…It seems prudent to advise that foetal/neonatal hypothyroidism be treated, as soon as the diagnosis is made, even in utero, to avoid neurodevelopment abnormalities, although the latter may occur independently of hypothyroidism. Twelve cases with gestational exposure to AMIO were identified in Canada: of six newborns with first-trimester exposure, one had congenital nystagmus with synchronous head titubation, there was one case of transient neonatal hypothyroidism (9%), and one of transient neonatal hyperthyroidism (9%): a fourth child, exposed to AMIO from the 20 th week of gestation, had developmental delay, hypotonia, hypertelorism, and micrognathia [107]. AMIO is excreted into human milk, so breast-feeding should not be initiated or should not be continued if the mother is treated with AMIO.…”
