Pregnancy-associated transient osteoporosis of the hip: results of a case-control study

Abstract: Our results support the hypothesis that pregnancy-associated TOH is a multifactorial disease, to which several individual factors may contribute. Hereby, we found significant associations with immobility, dental problems, and lack of exercise in childhood.

“…Although quite rare, pregnancy-associated osteoporosis plays an important role for BME differential diagnosis. Pregnant women may develop BME ("pregnancy-associated transient osteoporosis of the hip") in the third trimester or immediately postpartum, especially in the pelvic bone [86]. Pregnancy-associated osteoporosis is a severe disease, typically occurring during the first pregnancy, sometimes accompanied by multiple fractures [87].…”

“…The review we carried out seems to support the notion that TPBMES is most probably a single disease, whether it affects the hips (TOH) in middle aged males [1], or in younger females in their last trimester of pregnancy [20,21]. It may remain the same condition, with mild variations, if it involves the knee (TOK) [9] or the foot-and-ankle [2,6,15,22].…”

“…When amniotic fluid is given along with OXT, it may augment the action of OXT [ 4 ]. In the combined action of amniotic fluid and OXT in augmentation of labor, it is difficult to evaluate the action of different regimens of OXT [ 29 ]. In respect to the choice of the single OXT regimen in AL, the finding was clear about confounding effects on outcome measures.…”
