Pregnancy achieved following ICSI from a man with Klinefelter's syndrome and spinal cord injury

Abstract: Klinefelter's syndrome and spinal cord injury are major causes of male infertility. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a relatively new method of assisted reproduction. A testicular biopsy was obtained from a patient with the double complications of non-mosaic 47,XXY Klinefelter's syndrome and spinal cord damage, and motile spermatozoa were collected. ICSI was then performed. Of the four sperm-injected oocytes, three became fertilized and cleaved. Two embryos were implanted, resulting in a single pregn… Show more

“…Seventeen of 214 azoospermic patients referred to our institution between 1997 and 2005 were confirmed to have non-mosaic Kleinfelter syndrome by previously described procedures [3]. The couples underwent genetic counseling in regard to the etiology of their infertility and the potential risks of using retrieved testicular sperm for ICSI.…”

“…Several reports have described successful pregnancy outcomes in these patients using fresh testicular sperm obtained on the day of oocyte retrieval [2][3][4][5][6][7]. However, few reports in the literature exist in regard to using cryopreserved sperm for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) [8][9][10][11].…”

“…In this study, only one patient underwent ICSI with frozen/thawed sperm obtained from vasal aspiration. The case report by Kyono et al [16] was carried out with fresh spermatozoa obtained by SSR. As for the study undertaken by Mc Guire [17], 3 patients underwent testicular biopsy.…”

“…However, complete and detailed reproductive outcome was reported only for 87 nonmosaic patients comprising 70 cycles of ART, out of 21 publications [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][27][28][29][30][31][32]34,37,39,[41][42][43].
