Vapor-liquid-equilibrium data were obtained for binary aqueous solutions of six water-soluble linear polymers in the range 70-95°C. A classical gravimetric sorption method was used to measure the amount of solvent absorbed as a function of vaporphase water pressure. Polymers studied are polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyethyleneoxide, polyvinylalcohol, hydroxyethylcellulose, polyethylenimine, polymethylvinylether.The experimental data were reduced with Hino's lattice model that distinguishes between interactions due to London dispersion forces and those due to hydrogen bonding.

Sorption gravimetric and volumetric techniques performed at 25 C and at atmospheric pressure were employed to study the preferential and total sorptions from binary liquid mixtures of toluene þ lower aliphatic alcohols (C 1 -C 6 ) in a high-pressure low-density polyethylene membrane and the volume of the swollen membrane. Toluene was preferentially sorbed in all six systems. The total sorbed amount increased from pure alcohol to pure toluene. The experimental volume of the swollen membrane was compared with that calculated under the assumption that interactions between the polymer and liquid mixture were negligible. The composition of the binary liquid mixture sorbed in the polymer as a function of the composition of the bulk solution surrounding the membrane is presented.

For solutions of polystyrene (PS) samples of different relative molecular mass (molecular weight) M and intrinsic viscosities [q] have been measured at 298,15 K in pure toluene (T) and toluene/methanol (MeOH) mixtures. Upon mixing toluene (good solvent (1)) and methanol (nonsolvent (2)), a systematic decrease in the solvation power was obtained. A critical examination of the Stockmayer-Fixman method for obtaining unperturbed dimensions from intrinsic viscosity measurements has been made. It was found that the unperturbed dimensions were not constant and different from those measured in a theta solvent (T/MeOH mixture having volume fraction of methanol (@MeOH) = 0,23). The derived values of unperturbed dimensions were found to increase with increasing Kuhn-Mark-Houwink-Sakurada exponent a. A modified form of the Stockmayer-Fixman equation is presented. It is suggested that the volume effect be taken into account in a complementary fashion to obtain accurate estimates of unperturbed dimensions from data in active solvents where the mean-square end-to-end distance (3) increases at these conditions more rapidly than M. Different viscosity measurements of polystyrene (PS) and poly-(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) solutions containing non-ideal solvents were taken from the literature and found that the newly proposed, though purely empirical equation is valid.
