Sorption of binary mixtures of toluene + lower aliphatic alcohols C1 – C6 in low‐density polyethylene

Abstract: Sorption gravimetric and volumetric techniques performed at 25 C and at atmospheric pressure were employed to study the preferential and total sorptions from binary liquid mixtures of toluene þ lower aliphatic alcohols (C 1 -C 6 ) in a high-pressure low-density polyethylene membrane and the volume of the swollen membrane. Toluene was preferentially sorbed in all six systems. The total sorbed amount increased from pure alcohol to pure toluene. The experimental volume of the swollen membrane was compared with th… Show more

“…The total amount of the sorbed liquid per 1 g of dry membrane, ( Q m ), has been determined by a gravimetric method . A preweighed circular disc‐shaped membrane sample of the dry polymer (diameter of 6 cm) was immersed into an excessive amount ( m solution / m polymer ≈ 300) of the respective solvent mixture of an exactly known composition in a tightly sealed flask and allowed to reach sorption equilibrium.…”

“…One type of chemical engineering process, where mixed solvents have found broad use is separation of components from mixtures. Our research is focused on membrane separation processes and, as a further challenge, on the separation of single enantiomers from their racemic mixtures. The preparation of single enantiomers is important in the pharmaceutical industry and in pharmacology because two enantiomers may exhibit completely different biological or pharmacological activities, pharmacokinetic profiles or effectiveness, or they may exhibit different potency, as the interacting molecules in biological systems are also chiral .…”

“…The equilibrium sorption of various liquids (water, linear alcohols, linear alkanes, derivates of cyclohexane, aromates, 1-chlorohexane, chlorobenzene, benzoyl chloride, and nitrobenzene) into the LDPE membrane at three temperatures (15,25, and 35°C) were collected [26] and used for validation of model calculations. Randová et al [26] have carried out gravimetric sorption measurements on circularly cut LDPE polymer samples (area~25 cm 2 , weight~0.11 gr, thickness = 0.046 mm) at the temperatures 15, 25, and 35°C and at atmospheric pressure, where the samples were exposed to 40 cm 3 of the penetrant bulk.…”

“…As discussed in previous sections, the integral term ∫c A dX is equal toq A (LC sr /A) = 0.9 × q m (LC sr /A), so one obtainsC A ¼ 0:9Â LC sr 2 =A À Á Âq m . Thus, Eqn [22] can be rewritten as given in Eqn [25] :…”
