Show more

“…In recent years, in Brazil, the cowpea breeding programs have intensified, mostly aiming to enhance productivity, culinary qualities and virus resistance (FREIRE FILHO, 2011). However,in the latter case, with few exceptions (SILVA and BLEICHER 2010;SILVA et al 2012;BANDEIRA et al 2015;MELVILLE et al 2016) little emphasis has been given to the evaluation of virus transmitter, A. craccivora. Consequently, the search for genetic improvement there is the risk that genes for resistance to this insect will be lost.…”

“…The black aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the main pests of the cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. (BERBERET et al, 2009;RADHA, 2013;SOULEYMANE et al, 2013;HUYNH et al, 2015;MELVILLE et al, 2016). This insect, besides causing direct damages by sucking sap, is responsible, globally, for the transmission of a variety of viruses.…”

“…Those that exist generally use the VITA 7 cultivar, which is little-used agriculturally and which is highly susceptible to infestation BLEICHER, 2007;SILVA et al, 2018). On the other hand, many of the cowpea cultivars already on the market are susceptible to cowpea aphid BLEICHER, 2007;SILVA et al, 2012;BANDEIRA et al, 2015;MELVILLE et al, 2016;LOURENÇO et al, 2018;SILVA et al, 2018), This both decreases productivity and increases production costs for farmers using pest control products.…”
