Togo is one of the countries characterized by the highest deforestation rate in the world, caused mainly by the overexploitation of domestic biomass energy. Uapaca togoensis being one of the species appreciated for its strong calorific power, is increasingly overexploited, and its rarefaction in the Togolese forest landscapes becomes worrying hence the need to conduct this study to evaluate the possibilities of its vegetative reproduction. This study contributes to the sustainable development of natural resources by determining the optimal conditions for assisted regeneration of Uapaca togoensis. The approach consisted in conducting a series of nursery trials to determine the impact of the substrate, size of cuttings, sunlight, and apical tip coverage of the plastic film on its germination and budburst capacity. The lower calorific value is determined from samples in dry wood slices of 350g to 500g in five diameter classes. After 33 days, only one unscarred seed germinated in the compost. Substrate type, diameter of cuttings, sunlight, and plastic film significantly influenced the budburst rate and delay. More than 70% of the medium-diameter segments budded compared to 60% and 50% for small and large-diameter segments. More than 80% of the segments exposed to sunlight budded compared to 60% for the shaded segments. The average lower calorific value of dry wood of Uapaca togoensis varies between 7.35 Mj/Kg and 12.12 Mj/Kg depending on the humidity rate and the diameter.

Understanding local perceptions and the different uses of multipurpose plant species is essential for their sustainable management. Despite this, anthropogenic factors such as deforestation, overexploitation of natural resources, extension of agricultural lands, overgrazing, and bushfires, coupled with the adverse effects of climate change, are contributing to the loss of these species. This study analyses the perceptions of local communities in Burkina Faso regarding the threats to Detarium microcarpum and Detarium senegalense and their implications, aiming to contribute to the effective management and conservation of such species. Through individual semi‐structured and focus group interviews with 465 local people, data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, plant parts used, use categories, threats and their effects, proposed solutions, and perceived conservation strategies. Descriptive statistics (consensus for plant part and relative frequency of citation), component analysis, and non‐parametric analyses were used for data analysis. Results indicated that ethnicity, age, education level, and occupation were the most influential sociodemographic factors in relation to the use of these species. Six plant parts from both Detarium species are used across seven use categories, with fruits (0.40), trunks (0.16), and bark (0.27) being the most exploited. There was consensus among local populations regarding areas of abundance. Threat factors, their effects, and conservation solutions varied significantly according to site status. This study highlights the multipurpose uses of Detarium species throughout Burkina Faso and reveals that threats to these species are linked to the occupation and the status of each site. Sustainable use, effective conservation, and domestication of Detarium species should be considered to promote and sustain the exploitation of non‐timber forest products.

Les ressources forestières en bois énergie sont fortement exploitées en Afrique, entraînant la dégradation des peuplements d'espèces comme Detarium microcarpum. La présente étude, réalisée dans trois phytodistricts au nord du Bénin, vise à contribuer à l’élaboration de techniques durables d’exploitation de bois de feu dans les peuplements naturels de D. microcarpum. Différentes modalités de hauteur (à ras du sol, 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm et 50 cm du sol) et de diamètre ([4-10[, [10-15[et [15-20] cm) de coupe ont été testées sur D. microcarpum. Les données ont été collectées sur 240 souches coupées de manière aléatoire dans huit sites. Les mesures ont concerné le nombre de rejets par souche, la hauteur et le diamètre au collet des rejets. Les résultats issus des données collectées et les analyses de Kruskall-Wallis sur les variables « nombre de rejets », « croissance en diamètre » et « croissance en hauteur » révèlent une influence des modalités de coupe sur le développement des rejets. Cette influence est significativement plus importante sur les souches de grande taille. En effet, le nombre de rejets, la croissance en hauteur et la croissance en diamètre des rejets sont plus élevés lorsque la souche est coupée à une hauteur de 50 cm du sol avec un diamètre compris entre 15 et 20 cm. La coupe à 50 cm du sol avec un diamètre des souches compris entre 15 et 20 cm est par conséquent la meilleure option pour une gestion durable des peuplements naturels de D. microcarpum pour la fourniture de bois-énergie. Des études complémentaires pourraient se concentrer sur d'autres aspects de la régénération et de la croissance des rejets, ainsi que sur l'efficacité des pratiques de gestion recommandées, afin de fournir des informations supplémentaires pour une exploitation et une conservation plus efficaces de D. microcarpum.
