“…Furthermore a recent updated systematic review revealed an average of 0.1 tooth loss per year per patients who were in maintenance therapy after active therapy for at least 5 years. 20 The higher tooth loss rate in patients with no maintenance care is in agreement with a previous study, 29 where patients who were diagnosed with periodontal disease but untreated had an adjusted mean annual tooth loss of 0.36. The result is additionally supported by Löe et al 2 in Sri Lankan tea workers who were never exposed to periodontal treatment to have a mean tooth loss rate ranging between 0.1 and 0.3 teeth/patient/year.…”

“…These findings are also in agreement with other previous studies. 8,13,20,35,37 The presence of furcation involvement has clearly been associated with increased risk of tooth loss in populations undergoing regular supportive periodontal care. 9,17,41,45 It is also in agreement with a previous study 16 showing an increased risk of tooth loss with furcation involvement in molars without regular periodontal therapy in 1897 patient followed up to 11 years.…”

“…Fifth, next-generation sequencing for miRNA analysis was not used because the targeted miRNA in microarray analyses are pre-specified, and the number is limited. Finally, the effects of other confounders, such as tooth-related factors, cannot be excluded [47] and warrant careful attention.…”
