This study examined the sense of belonging to Latvia in Latvian-speaking and Russianspeaking residents of Latvia. The structural model involved opportunities for the fulfillment of personal goals and views of the situation in Latvia and the community as predictors of the sense of belonging at both levels of ecological systems. The Russianspeaking subsample consisted of 202 students ranging in age from 18 to 36 (65% females). The Latvian-speaking subsample involved 438 students ranging in age from 18 to 37 (67% females). The Sense of Belonging in Social Context Questionnaire and the Future of Country Questionnaire were applied. Belonging to community predicted belonging to Latvia in both groups of residents. However, the Russian-speaking minority group demonstrated more signs of local belonging and pragmatic ties with Latvia. Providing opportunities for fulfilment of personal goals and facilitating involvement of young people in processes at the country level are challenges for policies, aimed at integration and limiting emigration of young people.

South African universities have witnessed an increase in the number of international student enrolment. Strategies need to be put into place into ways of integrating and helping students develop a sense of belonging. The aim of this research (using a narrative analysis) is to understand how international students develop a sense of belonging as part of their enrolment at a rural university in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. In achieving this, a focus group discussion and reflective diaries were used at the start and end of the 2015 academic year using 20 international students. Data was analysed using the three levels of meaning making adopted in previous qualitative research. Three findings in the form of narratives emerge based on the data analysis. First, the formation of an in and out group mentality amongst international students.Second, the study reveals the factors that were narrated as influencing student's sense of belonging. Despite all this, students still narrated as "suffering a sense of elsewhere". Based on the findings and narratives generated from this work, suggestions are made that affect the work of lecturers, university administrators and also policy makers on what can be done to assist international students in developing a sense of belonging within a South African context as part of their enrolment.

In construction and supporting learners’ sense of belonging in a learning environment, teachers have proposed stimulating learners’ desire to learn. This article will present the results of a literature review on belonging to support the authors’ viewpoint that it is needed to foster a sense of belonging and accentuate school belonging in learning programs, practices, and research. This article explores how a sense of belonging prepares and support learners to take ownership of learning to promote self-directed learning (SDL) in learning communities. It argues for the need to locate the need for belonging in learning communities and define the essence of success for taking ownership of learning. Furthermore, the article will show how a sense of belonging is an essential human necessity and that nurturing a sense of belonging can be seen as imperative, irrespective of learners who do not have a deep understanding of non-belonging. However, for learners to effectively be part of a learning community, a nuanced approach to belonging should be followed to provide learners with a sense of belongingness for taking ownership of learning and how to support learners who do not feel like they belong (fit in) or feel left out. Nevertheless, this article will also attempt to show that, although there might be learners who experience deep senses of non-belonging, they learn, but they manage to excel, it still remains essential to fulfil the need to belong in educational contexts. In terms of the latter, this article proposes that belonging is one of the first things teachers ought to attend because when learners do not feel like they belong, they can find it challenging to have a sense of ownership. Hence, the article aims (a) to review the theoretical literature on a sense of belonging, emphasising its essential features. Then, in light of the essential features recognised, the author proposes (b) general and practical recommendations for educational stakeholders wanting to build and support learners’ sense of belonging at school as well as towards how teachers can cultivate a sense of belonging in learning communities to support learners who do not feel like they belong (fit in) or feel left out.
